Bulbs (updated 02/05)

Seeing as how my roses died (it was inevitable, really), I figured that I should get some flowering plants for the office. Just so happened that Trader Joe's was selling little bulb kits, so I got a Hyacinth and a Paperwhite. They are supposed to look like this...

Hyacinth Model:

Paperwhite Model:

Here's the progress so far.

Jan. 14: Planted the bulbs by soaking a soil patty in water until it reconstituted. Then fluffed up soil and planted bulbs into it. Here's the Hyacinth.

Feb. 1: Paperwhite is making a lot of progress, but Hyacinth is barely growing at all.

Feb. 5: Yep, Hyacinth is stunted. Advice from someone in the office is to give Hyacinth more sun. But, look at Paperwhite bloom! Shes a garden in the middle of the concrete jungle. Awww...

(ch-ch-ch-)Chia! (updated 03/31)

Check this out, dudes! I am starting a Chia herb garden in my office. I am growing basil, cilantro, chives, and parsley. Coach Nelson promised to make lasagna with the parsley if the project is a success. I started this project (with the help of Stubbie's Godmother) on Jan. 28.

Feb. 1: Only four days later, the basil and the cilantro are already starting to sprout!

Feb. 5: Basil and Cilantro continue their stellar progress. Parsley is just starting to take root, but something's up with Chives (check out the white powder).

Feb. 6: Ah. False alarm on the Chives. Parsley is also coming up. I guess I'm a bit of a Henny Penny on plants.

Mar. 31: Chives are officially a bust. Cilantro is only doing okay, but Basil and Parsley are great. Coach Nelson has confirmed the lasagna plan.

Vera (updated 09/06)

So, I'm growing all sorts of stuff in my office, including cacti. Like the NBA playoff schedule, I'll try to update this blog entry often with pictures of my dear Vera. The current day's photo will be the one shown on the blog. The older photos will be linked. You will also find a link to this blog entry in the left hand menu entitled "What's Growing in Nonny Nu's Office?"

I was really unsure about this one. Like with the roses, I wasn't optimistic about Vera. She hasn't really been growing "fatter" much for the past, um, well, let's see...three years. Yep, that's right. She just kept growing tall and falling over instead of growing stouter. But, she didn't give up! She's a toughie.

Sept. 6 Update:Here's Vera and her roommate. She's growing up tall and strong.

July 6: Yep, Vera's doing just fine.
June 1: Still going strong!
May 21: Look at the two new nubs, one near the base and the other near the center of the plant! Repotting with new soil and adding plant food really helped. I'm learning! I hope she gains some weight.

Roses (updated 09/28)

So, I'm growing all sorts of stuff in my office, including roses (!). Like the NBA playoff schedule, I'll try to update this blog entry often with pictures of the roses. The current day's photo will be the one shown on the blog. The older photos will be linked. You will also find a link to this blog entry in the left hand menu entitled "What's Growing in Nonny Nu's Office?"

Everyone is aware of the tragedy that usually befalls roses that enter my office (those purple ones didn't last). That's why I didn't include these yellow roses (you can't tell because their blooms are gone) in the "What's Growing in Nonny Nu's Office?" list at first. I just figured that the blooms would wither and die, and the entire plant would follow. But, check this out! I watered faithfully and put her in the sun. Now, there's new growth!

Sept. 28 Update: Bloom's over, but there is much new growth (all the lime green areas). I'm thinking of relocating the these gals into a larger pot.

Sept. 6: Well, it has been two months since my last confession update. I missed the last blooming roses because I was out of the office during MonkeyPig's visit to HQ. But, here they are blooming once again!
July 17: Folks, this is a miracle. This is a MIRACLE, I tell you. Not only is this thing NOT dead, it's blooming. BLOOMING!
June 6 (a), June 6 (b): Dudes, check out the bud that's growing on my ROSES!!!! I can't believe it. I just can't. After having killed about 3 of these things, I just didn't think it could be done. Roses in my office. Can you beat that?!
June 28: New development...there was some white powder on the leaves. I can't tell if it's dust or if it's some sort of growth. What do you guys think?
June 1: No actual roses yet, but this is the longest living rose plant I've had in my office.
May 21:More growth!
May 15: The light green portions are new growth.

Viola (updated 04/01)

So, I'm growing all sorts of stuff in my office, including African violets (present from Green Thumbs McGillicutty!). Like the NBA playoff schedule, I'll try to update this blog entry often with pictures of my dear Viola. The current day's photo will be the one shown on the blog. The older photos will be linked. You will also find a link to this blog entry in the left hand menu entitled "What's Growing in Nonny Nu's Office?"

Apr. 1 Update: After half a year of sleeping, Viola has finally awoken! Take a look at her now. She has three buds up front, but seven buds in the back!

Sept. 28: This is just the gift that keeps on giving. One died on the vine and didn't bloom, one already finished blooming and has been removed, and three more have yet to bloom. Plus the five you see here, and this batch totals 10!
Sept. 6: Viola's getting ready too bloom again (I count 7 currently).
July 17: Look at these beautiful blooms!
July 9 (a), July 9 (b): Three days later...bloom!!
July 6 (a), July 6 (b), July 6 (c): I have a good feeling about Viola. She's a good girl. She has been working on her blooms. Look, she has as few buns in the oven!
June 28: Look! The little nubs ARE new blooms!! (Pic 2, Pic 3)
June 18 (1) (Viola lost all her blooms (as is too be expected)...)June 18 (2) (but this might be a new bloom rearing its head.)
June 1: Well, Viola is losing her blooms one by one, but she's still a beauty and very healthy.
May 21: Seven blooms!
May 15: Six blooms!
May 10: Two new blooms.
May 9: What a pretty little girl! She's very happy here after escaping from the evil clutches of Green Thumbs McGillicutty.
May 7: New blooms.

Radishes (updated 07/25)

So, I'm growing all sorts of stuff in my office, including radishes. Like the NBA playoff schedule, I'll try to update this blog entry often with pictures of the radishes. The current day's photo will be the one shown on the blog. The older photos will be linked. You will also find a link to this blog entry in the left hand menu entitled "What's Growing in Nonny Nu's Office?"

07/25 Update: Okay, this is going to be the last entry. I harvested these on 7/25, but forgot to post the results. Obviously, they were not stellar. I ate the leaves and they were not bad, though.

July 6: I'm really tempted to dig these up and see what's underneath all that dirt. Any radishes? Or, just roots?? It's been, um, let's see...over 2 months. *SOMETHING* should have grown, don't you think?
June 28: A few of the stronger once revived, but the rest are a goner. I'll harvest those on monday.
June 18, June 25: I effed up, folks. I replaced the forks with stirers, but I forgot to water the radishes before I left on my birthday vacation last Friday. Add to that the fact that I was in San Diego last Thursday, that's four full days that the radishes were just baking there in te sun. When I got back, this happened. I'm thinking about harvesting early just to see how much of it grew, and starting a new batch. Should I?
June 1: Several people asked me what the fork is for. It's to get the raddishes used to their fate, of course--DUH!
May 21: I repotted these last Friday and also added a few more seeds. Look at these things grow!
May 15: Do these look stunted?
May 10
May 9: Soon, there will be radishes for the office.
May 7
May 6: Check out the new growth.

Wild Flowers (updated 09/06)

So, I'm growing all sorts of stuff in my office, including wild flowers (special gift from Stubbie's Godmother). Like the NBA playoff schedule, I'll try to update this blog entry often with pictures of the wild flowers. The current day's photo will be the one shown on the blog. The older photos will be linked. You will also find a link to this blog entry in the left hand menu entitled "What's Growing in Nonny Nu's Office?"

09/06 Update: Yep, looks like a weed alright (or, maybe a vine?). Too bad it's a weed and not weed. Otherwise, we'd be in business.

July 6: Okay, this is getting ridiculous. I think I may have gotten just a wild weed instead of a wild flower. Thoughts?
June 28: This thing just keeps growing taller. I really hope it blooms soon.
June 18: Not bad looking, but I wonder if this is a flower or just a weed?
June 1: There have been...difficulties. And, when I say, "difficulties," I mean gnats. I just had to get rid of the rest and keep this large plant. It was the only one of its kind in the bunch. I either have the makings of a wild flower or just a very hearty weed. I'll keep you posted. :o
May 21: Some of these look iffy, but notice the really hefty one with huge leaves on the lower left hand corner of the pic.
May 15: Don't ask me what happened because I don't know.

You will also find a link to this blog entry in the left hand menu entitled "What's Growing in Nonny Nu's Office?"

06/28 Update: It just didn't work out... This will be the last strawberry entry. I'm chucking this.
June 28
June 1: Oh, happy happy, joy joy!! Okay, I'll be honest, Stubbie's Godmother got me a new strawberry plant kit and she was the one who potted this. That was a couple weeks ago, and I really expected the same outcome, but look! Everything's coming up, Milhouse!
May 9: It's not looking good, people.

June 28
May 9: I can't decide if these or the strawberries look worse.
