Dog Canyon
by MonkeyPig (guest blogger)

Today, Bays and I went to Dog Canyon. It was a beautify day...low 70's. You can't beat that. The only thing was the wind was mediumly (is that a word) strong. Its the desert here, so there is always wind.

I have to admit, we were a bit late. So, I didn't get a chance to see what type of mountain formed the Dog Canyon. I figure, if I say its some sort of tectonic plate movement / volcanic activies, I'd be almost right. There, that's how Dog Canyon was form 2.4 quadrillion years ago. There were lots of cactus. See how they change colors at various stage of ripening. There a were plenty of desert plants coming up from the ground that were taller than me.
The most interesting thing is this picture. We were standing in the Sacramento mountain range. When you look west, you see a patch of white...Yes.. that's the white sand dunes of the White Sand National Monument.
The entire trial takes 8-10 hours. We only hiked 1 hour in and came out because it was getting late. Next time, we'll forego the morning jog and just drive out to Dog Canyon in the morning to finish to hike. I read on the internet that its worth the hike when you get to the top.

Ft Davis
by MonkeyPig (guest blogger)

This is another hike we went to a couple of weeks ago. Ft Davis is located at Jefferson County on your way to the famous McDonald Observatory (NPR's Earth & Sky). Its an old military post back when the US Army was protecting its "citizens" from the Indians. Its about 2 1/2 hour from El Paso. A very nice drive. But, bring your MP3. After about 1 hr east of El Paso, all you can pick up is a radio station that broad cast out of a general store. BORING.

There are a lot of eroded lava flows. Lots of desert flora.

I was looking at the rock formation an noticed a really good looking guy at one of the mountain. Can you make him out??

Baysee, as always, enjoys himself a lot when we go on hikes. I tell ya, that dog can really pee. Everytime we hike, he marks no less than 50 times. For the geology geeks, there are lots of various rock formations and various colors / mineralization that you can see.

Well, well, well. We're open for business!

Ha! Success! Someone commented! And, like any other real business, I'm framing the first dollar that came in.

As an FYI, AgPig (pronounced "Silver Pig") is sister #5. Ob/Gyn doctor in the Army, stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. Baysee is her dog. This photo was taken on Baysee's first day home from the pound. AgPig called me that day expressing concern that she had perhaps adopted a dumb dog because Baysee didn't seem to get the hang of the doggie door. After several minutes of discussion, it turned out that Baysee had gotten neutered earlier in the day. AgPig, let's carve out your spleen and see if you can put yourself through a doggie door. Oh, wait, been there, done that.*

Anywhooo, AgPig shall now go down in history as the first ever commentor at The World of Nonny Nu. She will be the first member of Nonny's Hall of Fame. A round of applause, please! *claps while moving hands in a circle*

As to why (Frodo) Stillman isn't in the pictures from yesterday's hiking trip at Long Ridge, Frodo didn't want to be photographed. She's a photogenic gal who reminds me of Elisabeth Shue, but was shy that day. But now, we have a request for a sighting. So, Stillman, be prepared to be photographed next weekend. I bet you'll turn out just as nice as the banana slug did. I'll work my Photo 0.0101 magic, don't worry.

If anyone wants to post photos, please feel free to email them to me at nonnynu@gmail.com. If you include a brief description, I will weave that into the blog entry. Otherwise, I'll make something up for you.

Oh, and no, I am getting my coaching free from Coach Nelson, who will kill me tomorrow because I didn't run today even though I had planned to.

*AgPig had a splenectomy several years ago, but you'd think she had an eye-ectomy...
