Question re: Lone Ranger

Dolly comes with Sirius, and my all time favorite channel is #118 Radio Classics. As you can see from the schedule (all times on schedule are EST), prime listening time for me are 8am-9:30am and 7:30pm-9pm, which includes the following programming:

(mornings)
The Shadow
Life of Riley
Lone Ranger
Phillip Marlowe

(evenings)
Gunsmoke
Charlie McCarthy Show <--this one is MMD
Twilight Zone

My favorite is Twilight Zone. They do a remarkable job bringing to radio the episodes that I know so well from watching TV.

One thing I never understood was why the Lone Ranger was named that. He is not alone, since he has Tonto and Dan Reid. In every episode I've listened to, Tonto is always by his side. I asked someone at the office this question, and they said that maybe the Lone Ranger started out as a one-man crime fighting gig, and he later acquired a sidekick.

However, it seems that this couldn't be true. This morning, the episode was about the origins of the Lone Ranger, but I missed the most crucial part when I ran into Starbucks to get coffee. By the time I got back, all I could deduce was that Tonto had saved the man who would become the Lone Ranger. So, when the he became the Lone Ranger, he already had Tonto. There was not a time when the Lone Ranger was all alone. So, what gives?

"There was not a time when the Lone Ranger was all alone."

so when he needed to 'excuse' himself at the saloon, tonto would accompany him?

As far as I can tell, the (Not) Lone Ranger only ever entered a saloon to kick someone's ass and never to use the facilities.

Wake up and smell the horse dung. Super heroes never need to "use the facilities". There is a special pocket in their utility belt just for that purpose.
I think Tonto should ask for a big paycheck from the LR. Not only did he save the LR, but if you watch the show, many times Tonto cook for the LR. What gives. Can this guy do anything by himself??

To tell you the truth, I don't know what's the big deal with the LR. MonkeyPig is right. Tonto does half of the crime-fighting work and all of the "house"work. But, it's not "Tonto and the Lone Ranger." It's "The Lone Ranger." I think this is another case of the White man keeping the Red man down. Any thoughts, Mr. Nonny Nu?

"Wake up and smell the horse dung."

i prefer eggs benedict, how many times must i tell you! (sometimes i wonder if your breakfast offers are actually some kind of joke, rather than a mere cultural difference.)

"Any thoughts, Mr. Nonny Nu?"

most of the red men aren't around for the white man to keep down. we butchered most of them.

"i have mixed feelings on manifest destiny," he said, while chewing on a cheeseburger with an ice-cold pepsi chaser.

Could it be that he was the only "Ranger" in the crime fighting duo, while the other dude was "The Lone Native American". Therefore he's "The Lone Ranger".

Hm. I suppose. But then, why wasn't Tonto called "The Lone Native American?"

Another theory is that there were a bunch of rangers (including the guy who would become the LR and also his brother--Dan Reid's dad) who were on some mega-assignment, and the LR was the only one who came out of that one alive. After Tonto/LNA nursed him back to health, he became the LR. So, maybe the "Lone" part refers to that? But, that would be lame, because people don't really know that backstory. I mean, Batman is obvious because he has a bat theme. Superman is also obvious because he's a superhuman. Every other hero has a name that describes his current theme, not his origins. I just don't know, man!
